Los Barrios

Los Barrios is a small town situated
in the Campo de Gibraltar, just inland from the N340 coast road, which stretches between Algeciras and Sotogrande. 

The so-called ‘Ruta del Toro’ (Bull Route) begins here, and the area is dotted with the bull farms, which rear the bulls for the bullfighting tournaments.

About town
The main street of Los Barrios used to be very busy, but the construction of the bypass has relieved the town of heavy traffic, and it now a nice peaceful area. The roads are lined with pretty flowerbeds, and roundabouts are decorated with sculptures, created by local artists.

The old part of town incorporates the Paseo de la
Constitucion and the central Plaza de la Iglesia, which is a typical shady square with cast iron benches where the locals congregate in the afternoon, playing dominoes or just gossiping about local life.

There is an old church, the Iglesia San Isidro Labrador, and a tower. The town hall has an interesting facade and there is also a Casino. (Not the modern gambling type but more like a club, the hub of the town’s social activity.)

Eating out
There is a good selection of restaurants and bars, serving mainly typical Spanish cuisine, seafood and tapas.

Climate
The climate in Los Barrios is predominantly Mediterranean, with generally hot and dry summers and mild winters.  The area is considered a year round destination.
